The low-carbon e-methane gas generated via our technology can be injected directly into the gas grid and used in multiple different ways. In gas or liquid form (eLNG), for example, it can be used for heating and transportation. In addition to this, e-methane can also be used to produce green electricity at power stations – effectively closing the loop and providing long-term storage for surplus renewable energy and empowering operators to scale up production.

How it works

Electrochaea’s biomethanation technology integrates as part of a two-step Power-to-Gas system to convert surplus renewable electricity into e-methane gas.

First, renewable electricity and water is electrolyzed to generate green hydrogen. This green hydrogen is then fed into a bioreactor, along with CO2 from any source. In the bioreactor, our patented methanogenic archaea synthesize e-methane from the green hydrogen and CO2 to produce grid-quality e-methane that’s indistinguishable from natural gas. If necessary, post-processing can be incorporated to optimize the quality of the output before it’s stored, transported or injected into the grid.
