José Blazquez - Process Engineer

 

José graduated from UCLM University in Spain with a degree in mechanical engineering, concentration in thermal energy systems, and earned a master’s degree from the Technical University of Berlin in solar technologies. Before joining Electrochaea, he has worked as an R&D engineer in the solar CSP industry, where he was involved in the design, development and demonstration of cost-saving advances for power tower system technologies.

 

Prior to his master's studies, he worked as a project engineer in the water supply and sanitation industry, where he focused on R&D activities in the field of water supply efficiency and loss control.

Rebekka Hausemer - Executive Assistant

 

Rebekka studied philosophy as well as German and English literature at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Birmingham, England. After graduation, she worked as a PR manager for German publishing houses and trade fair organizers where she was responsible for public relations and communication, social media relations and online publishing. Before joining Electrochaea as an Executive Assistant, she worked at a biotech company where she was in charge of executive support as well as team support at the department for clinical research and development. At Electrochaea, Rebekka is responsible for executive support, PR management and administration.

Liam Bansen – Process Engineer

Liam is a process engineer bringing experience from the clean-tech industry where he specialized in renewable fuels process technologies. Before joining Electrochaea, Liam worked for Quadrogen Power Systems, Inc. in Vancouver, Canada where he focused on the design, construction, and commissioning of novel biogas processing systems for fuel cell and power applications, hydrogen production, and gas grid injection.

 

Liam started his career as a mining consultant working in remote locations such as Bolivia and the Yukon where he concentrated on mining logistics and operations. Liam holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo where he focused on heat transfer and fluid dynamics. 

Matteo Cociancich – Junior Scientist

 

Matteo, a scientist and an engineer, has joined our team as a Junior Scientist after completing an internship at Electrochaea. He has a BS in biology and a MSc in environmental biology, which he completed at the University of Trieste in Italy. Subsequently, Matteo received a scholarship which gave him the opportunity to complete another MSc in environmental science at the Wageningen Research University in the Netherlands. There, he specialized in environmental technology, focusing on bio-electrochemical systems (BES) and urban environmental technology management.

 

At Electrochaea, Matteo is continuing his research on BES applications.

Felix Popp, PhD - Team Leader Biology

 

Felix is a microbiologist with broad experience in molecular biology, genetics and prokaryotic physiology. Before joining Electrochaea, he completed postdoctoral studies at Helmholtz Zentrum München in the field of groundwater ecology. There, he gained experience in the quantitative analysis of microbial communities and next generation sequencing approaches.

 

Felix received his PhD from LMU München after completing his doctoral studies in the lab of Prof. Schüler where he investigated the motility of magnetic bacteria. He holds a degree in Biology from the University of Freiburg where he worked on bacterial metal respiration processes.

José graduated from UCLM University in Spain with a degree in mechanical engineering, concentration in thermal energy systems, and earned a master’s degree from the Technical University of Berlin in solar technologies. Before joining Electrochaea, he has worked as an R&D engineer in the solar CSP industry, where he was involved in the design, development and demonstration of cost-saving advances for power tower system technologies.

 

Prior to his master's studies, he worked as a project engineer in the water supply and sanitation industry, where he focused on R&D activities in the field of water supply efficiency and loss control.

Rebekka Hausemer - Executive Assistant

 

Rebekka studied philosophy as well as German and English literature at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the University of Birmingham, England. After graduation, she worked as a PR manager for German publishing houses and trade fair organizers where she was responsible for public relations and communication, social media relations and online publishing. Before joining Electrochaea as an Executive Assistant, she worked at a biotech company where she was in charge of executive support as well as team support at the department for clinical research and development. At Electrochaea, Rebekka is responsible for executive support, PR management and administration.

Liam Bansen – Process Engineer

Liam is a process engineer bringing experience from the clean-tech industry where he specialized in renewable fuels process technologies. Before joining Electrochaea, Liam worked for Quadrogen Power Systems, Inc. in Vancouver, Canada where he focused on the design, construction, and commissioning of novel biogas processing systems for fuel cell and power applications, hydrogen production, and gas grid injection.

 

Liam started his career as a mining consultant working in remote locations such as Bolivia and the Yukon where he concentrated on mining logistics and operations. Liam holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo where he focused on heat transfer and fluid dynamics. 

Matteo Cociancich – Junior Scientist

 

Matteo, a scientist and an engineer, has joined our team as a Junior Scientist after completing an internship at Electrochaea. He has a BS in biology and a MSc in environmental biology, which he completed at the University of Trieste in Italy. Subsequently, Matteo received a scholarship which gave him the opportunity to complete another MSc in environmental science at the Wageningen Research University in the Netherlands. There, he specialized in environmental technology, focusing on bio-electrochemical systems (BES) and urban environmental technology management.

 

At Electrochaea, Matteo is continuing his research on BES applications.

Felix Popp, PhD - Team Leader Biology

 

Felix is a microbiologist with broad experience in molecular biology, genetics and prokaryotic physiology. Camilo started his career in the Colombian commodity market in Bogota, where he was responsible for sourcing financing opportunities for the clients, executing trading transactions and coordinating counterparty engagment in the trading process. He joined Electrochea as a Business Development Manager to prospect for new clients, execute world wide market analyses, develop the Company’s market and client network, and secure contracts with customers and partners.

Sven Reimann - Accountant

 

Sven Reimann studied law in Jena and works as a consultant for various companies. He has many years of practical experience in balance sheet accounting, real estate and foreign asset management and financial services. This expertise is supplemented by secondary professional trainings and qualifications.

 

Sven was involved in the structural organization and founding of biotech as well as IT companies in Thuringia and Bavaria and participated in several major projects, including the nationwide implementation of the occupational pension scheme at ATU Autoteile Unger. Sven is experienced in accounting, audit monitoring and controlling of various funding projects.

Jana Schütz – Office Administrator

 

Jana studied management, marketing and accounting at General Business Administration College in Presov, Slovakia. After graduation, she moved to Munich in order to learn German.

 

Before joining Electrochaea as an Office Administrator, she worked in the Munich hotel and conference industry where she was responsible for purchasing, conference management and general administration. At Electrochaea, Jana is in charge of travel management, accounting support and purchase and team support.

Matteo is a chemical engineer focused on project management and execution. He graduated from the University of Padua, Italy, with a degree in chemical engineering and broadened his cultural and engineering experience during  two semesters at Texas A&M University in College Station as a Visiting Scholar in the field of multiphase metering. Matteo has broad practical experience in process engineering  and project management. Before joining Electrochaea as a Project Manager, Matteo has honed his skills in the Oil&Gas and in the Steel Industry, as Project Engineer and as Project Manager for Direct Reduction Iron plants and Water Treatment Plants.

He began his professional career as a research associate at the Chair of Metal Forming and Casting  at Technische Universität München (TUM) and as a member of the chair's management responsible for the casting department.

 

Markus graduated from TUM with a diploma in mechanical engineering in 2001. During his graduate work, he managed several research and industry projects and his PhD thesis was Hot Isostatic Pressing of Aluminum and Magnesium alloys. He has lectured about production technologies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and product development at the University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt. Lars Angenent, PhD - Strategic Consultant

 

Dr. Lars Angenent, Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at the University of Tübingen, is interested in waste conversion to generate specific products such as energy carriers or platform chemicals. His research interests include anaerobic digestion, anaerobic fermentation, microbial electrochemistry, and syngas fermentation.

 

Dr. Angenent earned his Ph.D. at Iowa State University and is a Kavli Fellow (U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2008), Electrochaea Board member, and Electrochaea Technical Advisory Board member. In May 2016, he received an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.

Laurens Mets, PhD - Principal Investigator

 

Dr. Laurens Mets, Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago, is the Electrochaea technology founder. He has an extensive background in understanding how plant and algal cells construct their photosynthetic apparatus and on how photosynthesis functions as a solar energy conversion system. More recently he has focused on the conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methane using thermophilic archaea. Dr. Mets earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Fernando Keuchen - Technical Advisor

 

Fernando is an experienced industrial engineer with a wealth of experience in project management, plant commissioning, and technology development. He started his career as a commissioning engineer for Alstom Power, leading commissioning teams for sub-systems of very large combined cycle power plants in Spain, Brazil, Malaysia, and the United States. He then became an expert in concentrated solar power by working as a lead engineer for SENER, FLAGSOL, Siemens and STS.

Lars Angenent, PhD - Strategic Consultant

 

Dr. Lars Angenent, Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at the University of Tübingen, is interested in waste conversion to generate specific products such as energy carriers or platform chemicals. His research interests include anaerobic digestion, anaerobic fermentation, microbial electrochemistry, and syngas fermentation.

 

Dr. Angenent earned his Ph.D. at Iowa State University and is a Kavli Fellow (U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2008), Electrochaea Board member, and Electrochaea Technical Advisory Board member. In May 2016, he received an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship.

Laurens Mets, PhD - Principal Investigator

 

Dr. Laurens Mets, Associate Professor of Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology at the University of Chicago, is the Electrochaea technology founder. He has an extensive background in understanding how plant and algal cells construct their photosynthetic apparatus and on how photosynthesis functions as a solar energy conversion system. More recently he has focused on the conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methane using thermophilic archaea. Dr. Mets earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Fernando is an experienced industrial engineer with a wealth of experience in project management, plant commissioning, and technology development. He started his career as a commissioning engineer for Alstom Power, leading commissioning teams for sub-systems of very large combined cycle power plants in Spain, Brazil, Malaysia, and the United States. He then became an expert in concentrated solar power by working as a lead engineer for SENER, FLAGSOL, Siemens and STS.

Dr. Martin Kröner

 

Martin Kröner is a managing partner of Munich Venture Partners. Prior to joining the MVP team, Martin was co-founder and CEO of Agnion Energy Inc. and worked at Linde Engineering as member of the R&D team developing green hydrogen production. Prior to Linde, Martin built up Thermotec Engineering Services, a spin-off of the Technical University of Munich. Martin holds an M.S. in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. in combustion engineering from the Technical University in Munich. During his industrial career, he made several inventions reflected in 10 international patent applications.

Dr. Christian Reitberger 

 

Christian is an active business angel working with the b-to-v Group, and serves as a Partner with Wellington Partners. Christian is a savvy technologist with a passion for transforming breakthrough innovations into real businesses that have the potential to improve the state of our world. He has led venture, growth and buyout investments in the Electronics, Resource Efficiency and Software/AI & computer vision area.


Christian spent nine years with Apax Partners where he was a Partner in the Tech & Telecom team and five years with McKinsey where he worked with clients in the electronics, digitial media, telecom and medtech industries. He earned a PhD in physics from the University of Vienna with sub auspiciis praesidentis distinction. He conducted research at CERN and had exposure to a number of corporate R&D labs

Johannes Peschko

 

Johannes is serving as investor, board-member and business angel in a number of young companies. He is the co-founder of Sirius EcoTech Fonds Düsseldorf and currently has the role of a venture partner. He is an expert in renewable energy technologies and has set himself the goal to improve how we use our resources. Johannes has also led investments in the IT and manufacturing industries.

 

Johannes studied Mechanical Engineering and Management at Technical University of Berlin. He is an alumnus of Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft e.V.

 

Alexander Schmidt

 

Alexander has more than 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur, investor, consultant and interim manager. He acted as a founder, shareholder, managing director and supervisory board member for more than 10 companies, e.g. as a Co-founder of Pippa & Jean and as an Interim CTO of Fashionette. Alexander holds responsibility for up to 60 employees and executes international projects on strategic restructuring and post-merger processes.

 

Alexander has a diploma in business economics.
